A report on Programme Fundamentals of 3D Printing
The students of The Department of Mechanical Engineering, School of Technology Assam Don Bosco University, attended a 3 day workshop on 3D Printing held by 3DP COE at AMTRON, Tech City, near IIIT Guwahati From 30th of January to 1st February 2025. A total of 11 students attended the workshop with 5 students from the 2nd and 4th semester and 1 student from the 6th semester.
The first day began with a warm welcome from the organizers, followed by an inaugural session where faculty members introduced the objectives of the training. Professor Sajan Kapil, department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Guwahati and his team gave a presentation on ‘Introduction to 3D Printing. The morning session covered the fundamentals of 3D printing, including its history, different types of 3D printing technologies (FDM, SLA, SLS, etc.), and their applications in various industries. In the afternoon, participants were given a demonstration of 3D printers, including their components, working mechanisms, and software used for designing 3D models. The day concluded with a hands-on session where attendees learned how to prepare basic 3D models using CAD software.
Following 2 days the training focused on practical applications of 3D printing. They taught the 4 basic steps to printing any 3D model, i.e., CAD Planning, Slicing the CAD drawing with a 3D printing software, Printing with a 3D printer and Post Processing. The participants were then practically showed a 3D printer and printed a 3D model of a cat as an example. The trainers provided insights into slicing software, print settings, and material selection. A live demonstration was conducted where participants prepared and printed their models. Additionally, troubleshooting common printing issues, calibration techniques, and optimization strategies were discussed. The day ended with an interactive Q&A session where students clarified doubts and shared their experiences.
In the post lunch of 3rd day, session Mr. Antar Singh Arya, Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes, and Mr. Nirupam Chakma, member of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes, visited the programme, who also presented the certificates to the participants for attending the workshop. In conclusion, The 3-day training provided a comprehensive understanding of 3D printing technology. The combination of theoretical knowledge and hands-on practice enhanced the learning experience. The program successfully equipped participants with essential skills to utilize 3D printing for prototyping and innovation. It was a highly informative and engaging experience that broadened our perspective on the future of additive manufacturing. The program was coordinated by Leena Harshal Nemade, Department of Mechanical Engineering, S.o.T. ADBU.
