By working closely with community members, students were able to map needs, identify challenges, and appreciate the socio-cultural dynamics shaping everyday life in these regions.

Throughout the programme, students actively engaged with local communities and schools, fostering relationships built on trust and mutual learning. As part of awareness and outreach initiatives, they organized street plays under the “Nasha Mukt Bharat” campaign, promoted Swachhata Abhiyan, conducted plantation drives, and facilitated sports activities to encourage community participation and inclusion.

The practicum culminated in vibrant cultural programmes, which created a shared space for expression, celebration, and dialogue between students and community members, reinforcing the spirit of collaboration and solidarity.

Beyond activities, the experience served as a transformative learning journey. Students developed a deeper sense of empathy and social responsibility, while also enhancing their research, communication, and organizational skills. The use of participatory approaches strengthened their ability to engage critically with social issues and respond with context-sensitive interventions.

This initiative embodies the core philosophy of Service-Learning at ADBU—where education extends beyond the classroom to become a process of learning, reflection, and meaningful social engagement, shaping students into intellectually competent, morally upright, socially committed, and spiritually inspired individuals.

The Department of Social Work, Assam Don Bosco University, successfully conducted a Participatory Service-Learning cum Rural Practicum from 23rd MArch 2026 – 1st April 2026 across the communities of Mayong, Mawthir, and Khetri, offering students an immersive platform to engage with lived realities beyond the classroom.
