The Department of Bio-Sciences at Assam Don Bosco University observed International Microorganism Day<\/em> on September 18, 2024, with a programme held in the department auditorium commencing at 10:00 a.m. The event brought together students and faculty members for an engaging academic session highlighting the significance of microorganisms in science and health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme was anchored by Nisha, a student of the Department of Bio-Sciences, who welcomed the guest and attendees. Dr. Vedant Borah, Head of the Department of Bio-Sciences, formally welcomed the guest of honour, Dr. Luit M. Barkalita, Assistant Professor in the Department of Animal Biotechnology, College of Veterinary Sciences, Assam Agricultural University, Guwahati, and introduced him to the audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Barkalita delivered an insightful lecture on \u201cBacterial Type III Secretion System and Its Role in Host-Microbe Interactions.\u201d<\/em> He elaborated on how Gram-negative bacteria utilise this sophisticated secretion system to enhance virulence by injecting toxins directly into host cells. He further explained the precision of this mechanism, noting that toxin release is triggered only in close proximity to the host, underscoring its complexity and sensitivity. Additionally, he highlighted ongoing research exploring the potential of this system for drug targeting and therapeutic applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Encouraging academic collaboration, Dr. Barkalita invited students to make use of the research facilities available at the Department of Animal Biotechnology, College of Veterinary Sciences, Khanapara, for internships and research projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Monika Soni, Assistant Professor, who acknowledged the support of the Head of the Department and the Microbiology Society of India (MBSI) for providing the grant that facilitated the event. The programme ended with a tea break, followed by subsequent activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
