Don Bosco University Students Engage with Legislative Practices Firsthand<\/strong> Guwahati, April 9, 2025<\/em> \u2014 In a significant step toward fostering democratic awareness and youth leadership, students from the Department of Public Administration and Psychology<\/strong> at Assam Don Bosco University<\/strong> participated in the Youth Immersion Program<\/strong> organized by the Assam Legislative Assembly<\/strong> at the Srimanta Sankardeva International Auditorium, Guwahati<\/strong>. This inter-departmental study trip<\/strong>offered students a rare, hands-on opportunity to explore the inner workings of the state\u2019s legislative processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event was organized as a part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav<\/em> celebrations, fulfilling a resolution from the 8th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) India Region Conference, which called upon all legislative bodies to initiate youth-centric political engagement programs for national development and the common good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Visionary Theme with National Significance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program, themed “Assam Legislative Assembly \u2013 Procedures and Practices,”<\/strong> aimed to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Educate youth about legislative functioning and governance<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Promote civic participation and awareness<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Create platforms for informed dialogue on lawmaking and democratic processes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cultivate future-ready leaders capable of contributing to community and national growth<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With over 60% of India\u2019s population under the age of 30<\/strong>, the program recognized youth as a powerful force in shaping India’s democratic and developmental future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inspiration from Esteemed Leaders<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The highlight of the program was the inaugural session<\/strong>, which featured inspiring addresses by distinguished leaders:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shri Biswajit Daimary<\/strong>, Hon\u2019ble Speaker, Assam Legislative Assembly<\/em>, passionately urged students to take ownership of India’s democratic legacy. He reminded them that democracy thrives when its youngest citizens are informed, involved, and inspired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shri Shankarbhai Chaudhary<\/strong>, Hon\u2019ble Speaker, Gujarat Legislative Assembly<\/em>, highlighted India\u2019s vibrant parliamentary heritage and encouraged the youth to actively engage with political discourse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Numal Momin<\/strong>, Deputy Speaker<\/em>, emphasized ethical leadership and the significance of being a public servant with integrity and purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta<\/strong>, Vice Chancellor, Gauhati University<\/em>, called for educational institutions to act as nurturing grounds for civic leadership and policy innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These thought-provoking speeches energized the audience, setting a powerful tone for the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the day, students participated in an engaging series of sessions that deepened their understanding of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Legislative procedures<\/strong> such as the introduction and passage of bills<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Financial operations<\/strong> of the Assembly including budget discussions<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Question Hour and Committee structures<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roles and responsibilities of MLAs<\/strong> <\/strong>within the legislative framework<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interactive Q&A sessions allowed students to engage directly with officials and experts, sparking meaningful dialogue on governance and the role of youth in politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflections from the ADBU Delegation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The experience was profoundly enriching for ADBU students, who described the program as both educational and inspiring. Many expressed a renewed interest in public service, law, and policy-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cListening to Shri Biswajit Daimary speak about youth as torchbearers of democracy gave me a new perspective. We\u2019re not just students\u2014we\u2019re future leaders,\u201d<\/em> said one participant from the Public Administration department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inter-departmental nature of the trip fostered cross-disciplinary learning, with psychology students also gaining insights into political behavior, civic psychology, and social change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Platform for Future Engagement<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Youth Immersion Program bridged the gap between academic learning and real-world governance. Students left with enhanced knowledge, stronger civic consciousness, and the motivation to contribute meaningfully to their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
