Two-Day Hands-on Workshop on “Galaxies across Cosmic Time: From Observations to Data Analysis”

A two-day hands-on workshop on “Galaxies across Cosmic Time: From Observations to Data Analysis” was held on 21st–22nd January 2026 at the Computer Laboratory, Academic Block 1, Assam Don Bosco University (ADBU), Tapesia Campus. The workshop was organised by the ADBU Space Club in collaboration with the Department of Physics, and featured Dr. Rupjyoti Gogoi, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, Tezpur University, and Dr. Anshuman Borgohain, Postdoctoral Fellow, IUCAA, Pune, as the resource persons. The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Monmoyuri Baruah, Head of the Department of Physics, following which the technical sessions were conducted. On the first day, participants were guided through the installation and setup of essential software packages required for running SAOImageDS9, a widely used astronomical imaging and data visualisation tool, with detailed explanations on image scaling, colour mapping, and brightness interpretation for galaxy analysis. The second day focused on the installation and use of GALFIT software for morphological studies of astronomical objects such as galaxies and white dwarfs. A total of 50 students along with faculty members from the Department of Physics actively participated in the workshop, gaining valuable practical exposure to observational data analysis techniques in astrophysics.
