About the Department

The Department of Bio-Sciences under the School of Life Sciences was established on 3rd August 2015 with 3 Post Graduate Courses – MSc Biotechnology, MSc Microbiology and MSc Biochemistry. The Department has well equipped laboratories and dedicated faculty who engaged in various research projects.

The department has been offering Ph.D. programmes in Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Biotechnology, contributing to advanced research and scholarly development in diverse areas of life sciences. In alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the department is also set to introduce undergraduate programmes, including B.Sc. in Biotechnology and B.Sc. in Microbiology, and will adopt the NEP 2020 course structure for its M.Sc. programmes from 2026.

Programmes offered by the Department:

MSc in Biochemistry

This programme provides advanced knowledge of biochemical principles and their experimental basis, with focus areas including immunology, medical biochemistry, genetic engineering, physiology, bioenergetics, and metabolism. Students are trained in analytical techniques, scientific communication, and research methodologies.

Graduates are equipped for careers in pharmaceuticals, healthcare, research laboratories, diagnostics, food and nutrition industries, environmental monitoring, and forensic science.

MSc in Biotechnology

The M.Sc. in Biotechnology programme addresses emerging areas such as bioenergy, bioremediation, synthetic biology, genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, and bionanotechnology. Core areas include genetic engineering, plant and animal biotechnology, immunology, and bioprocess engineering.

The programme prepares students for careers in biotechnology industries, research and development organisations, healthcare sectors, and bio-based enterprises.

MSc in Microbiology

This programme focuses on microorganisms and their applications in healthcare, environmental science, and industrial processes. Key areas include virology, bacteriology, mycology, microbial genetics, and immunology.

Graduates find opportunities in hospitals, pharmaceutical and agro-industries, food processing units, diagnostic laboratories, water treatment facilities, and environmental agencies.

Skill Development Courses for M.Sc. Programmes

To enhance practical competencies and industry readiness, the Department of Bio-Sciences offers specialised skill development courses as part of the MSc programmes, including:

  • Sustainability and Bioengineering
  • Fermentation and Food Microbiology
  • Mushroom Cultivation
  • Herbal Drug Development

These courses are designed to provide hands-on training, promote innovation, and support entrepreneurial thinking among students.
