One-Day Workshop on R for Climate Change and Disaster Studies

The Research and Development Cell (RDC), Assam Don Bosco University (ADBU), in collaboration with the Departments of Botany, Zoology, and Physics, organized a one-day workshop titled “Getting Started with R: A Foundation for Climate Change and Disaster Studies” on 5 October 2026 at Crystal Hall, Tapesia Campus, ADBU.

The workshop aimed to introduce participants to R, an open-source statistical computing platform, with a focus on data management, statistical analysis, and visualization for climate change, environmental research, and disaster studies.

Dr. Raj Kumar Pegu, Director, School of Life Sciences, ADBU, inaugurated the programme and felicitated the resource person, Dr. Kuladeep Sarma, Department of Zoology, Gauhati University. He highlighted the importance of research skills and analytical tools in strengthening scientific investigations.

The technical sessions covered the fundamentals of R, basic statistical analysis, graphical representation of data, and interpretation of analytical results. The resource person highlighted the applications of R in analysing temperature and rainfall data, identifying environmental patterns, and supporting interdisciplinary research.

The workshop witnessed encouraging participation from students, research scholars, and faculty members representing diverse academic disciplines, including Botany, Zoology, Geography, Economics, and Bioscience.

The programme was coordinated by Dr. Jyotishman Deka, Dr. Lima Hazarika, and Dr. Bikash Kalita. The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Jyotishman Deka.

The initiative reflected ADBU’s commitment to strengthening research capacity, promoting data literacy, and encouraging the use of accessible, open-source analytical tools for addressing contemporary challenges related to climate change and disasters.
