Promoting Sustainable Urban Living through Awareness and Action

The Department of Botany, under the banner of the Biowizard Club, celebrated World Habitat Day 2025 on 13th October 2025 at the Tapesia Campus of Assam Don Bosco University. The event was organized under the Viksit Bharat Abhiyan (1947–2047) initiative with the global theme “Urban Crisis Response”, highlighting the importance of sustainable urban development, ecological balance, and biodiversity conservation in urban landscapes.

The celebration commenced at 7:30 a.m. in the Atrium, Block 1, with an opening address by Dr. Thounaojam Thorny Chanu, Head of the Department of Botany, who emphasized the relevance of this year’s theme and the critical need for collective environmental responsibility in addressing urban challenges.

Field Activity: Connecting Learning with Action

A total of 61 students and faculty members actively participated in the event. As part of the day’s activities, participants undertook a plant collection trip within the university campus to document and identify various species growing in the surrounding natural habitats. The exercise provided practical exposure to plant specimen collection, labeling, and field data recording, enhancing participants’ understanding of plant biodiversity in urban ecosystems.

The collected specimens were deposited and curated in the Department of Botany Herbarium for long-term reference and future research purposes. This hands-on exercise reinforced the significance of herbarium preparation and the vital role it plays in biodiversity documentation and conservation.

A Step Toward Environmental Stewardship

The World Habitat Day 2025 celebration successfully blended awareness-building sessions with practical environmental engagement, offering participants a meaningful way to connect academic learning with real-world ecological action.

By focusing on the theme “Urban Crisis Response,” the event underscored the interdependence between urban development and natural ecosystems, encouraging participants to adopt sustainable practices in everyday life. The Department of Botany continues to remain committed to promoting environmental education, sustainability, and biodiversity conservation through such experiential learning initiatives.
