The Ph.D. in Botany programme is designed to promote advanced research in diverse and emerging areas of plant sciences. The programme offers opportunities for in-depth investigation in specialized domains such as Plant Ecology and Geoinformatics; Biodiversity Conservation; Taxonomy and Systematics; Economic Botany; Ethnobotany; Plant Physiology and Biochemistry; Plant Pathology and Microbiology; Molecular Biology and Biotechnology; Mycology and Mushroom Biology; Microbial Interactions; Plant Stress Physiology and its Mitigation; Bioinformatics; Environmental Stress Biology; and other allied fields.
Special emphasis is placed on the sustainable utilization of plant and fungal resources, nutraceutical and medicinal plant research, conservation of indigenous biodiversity, and innovative approaches to crop improvement. The programme encourages interdisciplinary research that integrates field-based studies, laboratory experimentation, molecular techniques, and advanced biotechnological, bioinformatics, and geoinformatics tools.
The Department provides a vibrant research environment supported by well-equipped laboratories, access to advanced analytical instruments, computational facilities, and collaborations with national research institutions. Scholars are encouraged to publish in reputed peer-reviewed journals, present their findings at national and international conferences, and participate in funded research projects. Particular attention is given to region-specific research priorities, especially those relevant to the biodiversity rich North Eastern region of India. The programme promotes innovation in climate-resilient agriculture, plant stress tolerance mechanisms, and eco-restoration practices.
The Ph.D. programme also emphasizes capacity building in modern research methodologies, including molecular marker techniques, genomics, metabolomics, microbial biotechnology, data analytics, and computational biology. Eligibility
Grade /Marks requirement from qualifying examinations
Graduation in any area of Life Sciences with 60% in the aggregate and Chemistry as a subject. Those who have a background in Biochemistry at Bachelor’s Degree will have an advantage.
Provisional Admission
Applicants who have not yet obtained their Bachelor’s Degree also may apply for admission. Such candidates would be offered provisional admission until they furnish evidence of fulfilling the eligibility criterion stated in (1) above within 3 months of the commencement of the programme.
