Special Lecture on National Panchayati Raj Day 2025

On the occasion of Panchayati Raj Day 2025, Assam Don Bosco University, Department of Public Administration hosted a special lecture delivered by Prof. Jayanta Krishna Sarmah, a distinguished expert in Political Science from Gauhati University. The virtual event, held on 24 April 2025 at 11:00 AM, was organized to commemorate the significance of decentralized governance in India and its impact on rural development. Dr Santhosh J, Assistant Professor, Coordinator introduced the speaker and the theme at the beginning.

Prof. Sarmah’s lecture focused on the evolution, challenges, and future prospects of the Panchayati Raj system in India. He traced the historical development of local self-governance, emphasizing the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act of 1992 as a landmark in empowering rural institutions. He highlighted the role of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) in fostering grassroots democracy and inclusive development.

The lecture was attended by a diverse audience comprising faculty Dr Khaidem Y. Singha, research scholars, and students from both postgraduate and undergraduate programs. Prof. Sarmah’s engaging delivery and insightful analysis sparked a lively Q&A session, where participants raised questions on topics such as gender equity in PRIs and the role of digital tools in governance. The lecture provided valuable perspectives on the practical and theoretical aspects of decentralized governance, inspiring students and researchers to explore this field further.
