The Department of Social Work, Assam Don Bosco University, Tapesia Campus, organized a 10-day Rural Practicum cum Participatory Service Learning programme from 1st to 10th April 2025 for MSW Second Semester students across multiple locations, including Rangthong Village, Mawthynrew (Meghalaya), and Bheluadanga in Biswanath District, Assam. Conducted as a mandatory fieldwork component, the programme provided immersive experiential learning through direct engagement with rural communities and development contexts.
Students participated in a range of activities such as community interaction, household surveys, Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) exercises, awareness programmes, group discussions, and need assessment. In collaboration with local stakeholders, schools, and development agencies, they explored key themes including sustainable rural development and community well-being.
The practicum significantly enhanced students’ understanding of rural realities while strengthening their competencies in communication, teamwork, adaptability, and community mobilization. It also fostered empathy, cultural sensitivity, and a deeper sense of social responsibility. Overall, the programme served as a transformative learning experience, effectively bridging classroom knowledge with field-based practice.
