Outreach Community Awareness Program on Sustainable Waste Management, Plastic Reduction and Nutrition and Health

As part of the World Environment Day 2026 Pre-Campaign and in alignment with the objectives of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), the Department of Botany, Assam Don Bosco University, actively participated in environmental awareness initiatives through a Service Learning Outreach Programme.

The activity focused on promoting sustainable waste management, reduction of single-use plastics, and awareness on nutrition and health among school students. Through this community engagement initiative, the department sought to encourage environmentally responsible behaviour, foster sustainable lifestyles, and strengthen the connection between academic learning and societal well-being.

The Department of Botany, Assam Don Bosco University, successfully organized an Outreach Community Awareness Program on Sustainable Waste Management, Plastic Reduction, and Nutrition and Health on May 26, 2026 at St. Patrick’s High School, Nazarikhat, Sonapur, Assam.

The programme was conducted by the students of M.Sc. 4th Semester, Department of Botany, under the guidance of Dr. Thounaojam Premlata Devi, Assistant Professor, as part of the department’s community engagement and extension activities. The initiative aimed to create awareness among school students about environmental conservation, responsible waste management, reduction of plastic use, and the importance of nutrition and healthy lifestyles.

Students from Classes VII, VIII, and IX enthusiastically participated in the programme and actively engaged in the various awareness sessions. The outreach programme featured informative presentations and interactive discussions focusing on three key themes:

Sustainable Waste Management

Participants were introduced to the importance of proper waste segregation and environmentally responsible disposal methods. The sessions emphasized the principles of reducing, reusing, and recycling waste and highlighted their role in protecting the environment.

Plastic Reduction

Students learned about the harmful impacts of single-use plastics on ecosystems and human well-being. The programme encouraged the adoption of sustainable alternatives and inspired participants to incorporate eco-friendly practices into their daily routines.

Nutrition and Health

The awareness sessions also focused on the significance of balanced nutrition, healthy eating habits, personal hygiene, and lifestyle choices that contribute to overall physical and mental well-being.

The programme was highly interactive, with students actively participating in discussions, responding to questions, and sharing their perspectives on environmental and health-related issues. Their enthusiasm reflected a growing awareness of the importance of sustainable living and responsible citizenship.

Through this initiative, participants gained valuable knowledge and practical insights that can help them make informed choices for a healthier and more sustainable future. The programme also strengthened the university’s commitment to community outreach and environmental education.
