Two-Day Workshop on Basic Biostatistics for Researchers

The Department of Zoology, Assam Don Bosco University, organized a two-day workshop on “Basic Biostatistics for Researchers” on 28th and 29th October, 2025. The main objective of the programme was to familiarize participants with the fundamental concepts of biostatistics and introduce them to the use of software tools for statistical data analysis, enabling them to apply suitable statistical tests and correctly interpret research data. The inaugural session began with a welcome address by Dr. Biswajit Chakdar, Assistant Professor (Senior), followed by remarks from Dr. Jane Wanry Shangpliang, Head of the Department of Zoology. Both speakers emphasized the importance of statistical understanding in research and encouraged participants to strengthen their analytical and data interpretation skills.

The technical sessions were led by Prof. Hilloljyoti Singha, Professor, Department of Zoology, Bodoland University, who served as the chief resource person. He was assisted by Mrs. Bibha Rani Talukdar, Assistant Professor, Goreswar College, and Mr. Saurabh Mardi, Research Scholar, Department of Zoology, Bodoland University. The workshop comprised two technical sessions each day, which included detailed lectures and hands-on demonstrations on data summarization, hypothesis testing, and various statistical tests such as the Chi-square test, t-test, z-test, Kruskal–Wallis test, Mann–Whitney U test, ANOVA, and correlation analysis. Participants also received practical training using PAST software and Microsoft Excel to perform these analyses, interpret outputs, and understand the appropriate applications of each test. A total of 23 participants attended the workshop, including three faculty members, nineteen Ph.D. research scholars, and one project associate from Assam Don Bosco UniversityUniversity of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), and Assam Down Town University. Participants were primarily from the Departments of Zoology, Biosciences, and Microbiology.
