An educational excursion to
Manas National Park was organized by the
Department of Zoology, Assam Don Bosco University, for the students of M.Sc.
2nd Semester. The purpose of the visit was to provide field based exposure to
wildlife ecology, biodiversity conservation, and habitat assessment in a
protected area of international importance. The excursion was conducted under
the supervision of Dr. Rubaiya Hasan , Dr. Bakhtiar Hussain and Lab
Assistant Ms. Juli Morang . A total of 39 M.Sc. 2nd Semester students
participated in the excursion. The group departed from the university on the
morning of 7th February and reached the accommodation Smiling Tusker
Elephant Camp at around 1:00 PM. In the evening, students participated in a
guided nature walk inside the national park led by an expert naturalist, where
they observed forest and grassland ecosystems and gained practical insights into
habitat structure and biodiversity. Later at 7:30 PM, a documentary on Manas
National Park was screened, highlighting its conservation history, endangered
specie s, and management initiatives.
On 8th February, the group undertook an early morning safari ride up to the
Indo Bhutan border region, where several wildlife species were observed,
including the Indian One Horned Rhinoceros and the Capped Langur , along
with wild buffalo, elephants, and various bird species. The safari provided
valuable exposure to grassland and riverine ecosystems and practical wildlife
observation techniques. The students also visited the park museum to
understand the conservation history and biodiversity records of the area. After
lunch, the team began their return journey to the university at around 1:30 PM.
The excursion proved to be academically enriching, enhancing students’
understanding of wildlife ecology, conservation strategies, an d protected area
management.
