The Department of Zoology organized an educational field visit to the Borduar Sericulture Farm, Kamrup on 08th May, 2026 for B.Sc. Zoology 4th Semester Minor students and M.Sc. Zoology 4th Semester (Entomology Specialization) students. The visit was conducted as part of their academic requirements to provide practical exposure to sericulture practices and silk production. A total of 28 students participated in the programme and were accompanied by faculty members Dr. Bakhtiar Hussain and Dr. Biswajit Chakdar.
During the visit, students observed the rearing practices of Eri silkworms and learned about different stages involved in sericulture. The farm officials demonstrated the complete life cycle of the silkworm, including egg, larval, pupal, cocoon, and adult stages. Students also gained practical knowledge about larval rearing techniques, cocoon harvesting, and storage methods.
Special emphasis was given to the host plants used for Eri silkworm rearing, particularly Castor (Ricinus communis) and Kesseru (Heteropanax fragrans). The importance of these host plants in the growth and development of silkworm larvae was explained in detail. The students were further shown the machine used for extracting silk yarn from cocoons and were introduced to the basic process of yarn production. The farm personnel also explained common diseases affecting silkworms and the control measures adopted in sericulture farms.
The field visit proved to be highly informative and beneficial for the students. It provided valuable practical exposure and helped them understand the scientific and economic importance of sericulture in Assam. The visit successfully complemented classroom learning by offering hands-on experience in applied entomology and sericulture technology.
