Celebration of World Environment Day 2026

The Department of Zoology, Assam Don Bosco University (ADBU), in collaboration
with WWF-India and the NSS Unit, ADBU Tapesia Campus, organized a series of
activities to commemorate World Environment Day 2026 under the Government of
India’s Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) initiative. The programme was
conducted with the objective of promoting environmental awareness, encouraging
sustainable lifestyles, and contributing to climate change mitigation through
afforestation and community participation. The theme for World Environment Day
2026 was “Climate Change”, highlighting the urgent need for collective action to
address environmental challenges and build a sustainable future.

The celebration commenced on 2nd June 2026 with a plantation drive at the Tapesia
Campus of Assam Don Bosco University. The programme was jointly organized by
the Department of Zoology, WWF-India, and the NSS Unit, ADBU Tapesia Campus. WWF-India supported the initiative by providing a total of 700 fruit-bearing and medicinal plant saplings (Table 1). The plantation programme witnessed enthusiastic
participation from 45 students, faculty members, and NSS volunteers. During the
event, 350 saplings were planted across various locations within the University’s
Tapesia campus to enhance the green cover and contribute to long-term ecological
sustainability. The plantation activity provided participants with an opportunity to
engage directly in environmental conservation and underscored the importance of
trees in carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and climate change
mitigation.

In addition to the saplings distributed to schools, the remaining saplings were
distributed among school students for plantation in their homes and communities. This initiative was aimed at extending the impact of the programme beyond the university campus and promoting environmental responsibility among young learners
and their families.
