Institute of Pharmacy, Assam Don Bosco University Organises National Workshop on Intellectual Property Rights and Patent Filing

The Institute of Pharmacy, Assam Don Bosco University (ADBU), in association with the Training and Placement Cell, IQAC, and the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Intellectual Property Management (RGNIIPM), Nagpur, under the National Intellectual Property Awareness Mission (NIPAM), Government of India, successfully organised an online workshop on “Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), Patents and Design Filing” on Tuesday, 9 June 2026.

The workshop witnessed an overwhelming response with 405 registrations from 76 academic institutions across India, comprising 259 students and 146 faculty members and staff, reflecting the growing interest in intellectual property education. Assam Don Bosco University recorded the highest participation with 116 registrations, followed by several pharmacy institutions from across the country.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by Prof. Deepak Sharma, who highlighted the importance of intellectual property awareness in higher education and research. The session was efficiently hosted and moderated by Ms. Clarynda of the Institute of Pharmacy.

The keynote lecture was delivered by Dr. Bharat N. Suryawanshi, Assistant Controller of Patents & Designs, RGNIIPM, Nagpur, an expert with over two decades of experience in the Indian Patent Office under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. During his insightful presentation, Dr. Suryawanshi elaborated on the fundamentals of Intellectual Property Rights, various forms of intellectual property, the patent filing process in India, design registration procedures, international patent frameworks, and the role of NIPAM in promoting innovation and intellectual property awareness. He also provided practical guidance on patent drafting and discussed career opportunities in the field of intellectual property for pharmacy professionals.

An interactive question-and-answer session enabled participants to engage directly with the resource person and clarify their queries regarding patents, innovation protection, and intellectual property management. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Arindam Chatterjee, followed by the announcement of e-certificates for all participants. Speaking on the occasion, the organisers emphasised that fostering awareness of intellectual property is crucial for transforming academic research into innovative products and technologies. They noted that such initiatives encourage students and researchers to protect their intellectual assets and contribute to the nation’s innovation ecosystem.

The workshop successfully enhanced participants’ understanding of intellectual property rights, patent and design filing procedures, and innovation protection strategies while strengthening institutional collaboration with RGNIIPM under the National Intellectual Property Awareness Mission. The Institute of Pharmacy, Assam Don Bosco University, reaffirmed its commitment to promoting innovation, entrepreneurship, and research excellence through such national-level capacity-building programmes.
